The average Australian eats out 4 times per week at one of the nation’s 17,000 takeaway food restaurants. We are spending an approx 40% of our annual food budget on eating out, compared with just 12% in 1960. In a bid to address the obesity epidemic and to avoid negative publicity, many of the larger Fast Food chains are offering healthier options as part of their meal choices. While the majority of fast food is nutritionally poor and calorie laden it is now possible to sift through a menu and find relatively healthy, low calorie options.

Here are my top 5, “Best of the Worst” Takeaway Food Options when you have no other choice or just want a relatively healthy treat.

I have chosen the following meals based on the criteria:

Less than 400cal/1700kj, less than 15g total fat, less than 5g saturated fat, less than 15g sugar

McDonalds Seared Chicken Sweet Chilli Wrap (add McDonalds Garden Salad)

KFC Original Fillet Burger (add KFC So Salad)

Hungry Jacks TenderGrill Wrap (add Hungry Jacks Garden Salad)

Nandos Supremo BBQ Chicken Burger (no Mayo) (add Nandos Fresh Garden Salad)

Red Rooster Peri Peri Wrap with chili and garlic aiolo

Unfortunately none of the above choices achieve the recommended 500g sodium or less.
