If your New Years resolution was to start a healthy eating plan then the best place to begin is your kitchen. Whatever your health and fitness goals are, the key to long term success comes down to what you put in your mouth! No amount of exercise and training will undo a diet high in calorie dense, high fat, sugary processed foods. Keeping your pantry and fridge full of healthy nutritious foods will prevent poor food choices and allow you to prepare quick and easy meals faster than you can order takeaway. So pick up a rubbish bag and follow my 5 essential steps to a lean, clean kitchen.

Throw Out the Junk

Time to be ruthless. Grab a plastic bag and throw out any foods that contain the following:

1.More than 6 ingredients.

2.Made with refined white flour.

3.Have sugar or sugar alternative as first 3 ingredients.

4.Anything that your grandmother would not recognise as a food.

Time to Shop

Follow a 80/20 rule whereby 80% of the food you have in the kitchen is everyday food and 20% is occasional treat foods.

Get Organised

Out of sight, out of mind so place your occasional foods at the back of the pantry so that they are away from temptation. Group all similar foods together such as breakfast cereals, crackers so that you know what your choices are. This also makes it easy when you need to restock.

De Clutter

Remove from your bench top and cupboards any appliances that you have not used for the last 12 months, old juicers, blenders that don’t work etc. This will help you to identify what you need to replace and what has just been taking up space and gathering dust. A clean and clutter free bench space will inspire you to prepare healthy meals.
