If you are eating sushi on a regular basis thinking that it is a healthy, low calorie takeaway option then think again. For over 20 years now Sushi has been touted as the nutritious alternative to fast food in Australia but it is not the healthy food we think it is.

The next time you visit your local sushi restaurant unravel a piece. It breaks down to 90% white rice and approx. 10% fish or vegetable. And maybe even a big dollop of mayo.

Take for example 2 salmon avocado sushi rolls at 488 calories, 17.4g protein and 64g processed carbohydrates. A big Mac has the same calorie content with twice the protein, and half the carbohydrate content. Yes the Big mac is high in fat and saturated fat but if you are watching your calorie intake then sushi rolls are not the answer.

Try the following healthier option. Salad with avocado, sashimi and miso soup. Swap the miso for green tea if you prefer or order a serve of edemame for a high protein and fibre snack.
